EXPO 2022
On April 7, more than 225 students from disciplines across the College of Charleston campus shared their mentored research projects during EXPO 2022 at TD Arena. This was the inauguration of an annual event to celebrate student achievements and the unique student-faculty research collaboration found at the College.
“We are thrilled to be able to bring students together from all disciplines and showcase their great work,” says Suzanne Austin, Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost at the College of Charleston. “By leveraging all of the collaborations already happening across campus, we are able to offer a large-scale demonstration of our students’ accomplishments and, by extension, the faculty and staff who support and mentor our students.”
The Alumni Association provided monetary prizes and certificates for the winning students for each of the Schools:

Zach Smith of the School of Sciences and Mathematics for General Relativistic Magnetohydrodynamic Simulations of Ultra-Luminous X-ray Objects. Mr. Smith is majoring in astrophysics and his Faculty Mentor is Dr. Chris Fragile.

Mary Lightsey of the School of Education, Health, and Human Performance for Associations between Mental Health and Pandemic Experiences among Undergraduate College Students. Ms. Lightsey is majoring in public health and her Faculty Mentor is Dr. Leslie Burdett Hart ’03.


Paige Meyers of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences for Leveling the Playing Field: Can We Improve Employment Outcomes for Individuals with Autism? Ms. Meyers and Ms. Kaup are majoring in psychology and their Faculty Mentor is Dr. Cindi May.
Rachel Kaup of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences for Leveling the Playing Field: Can We Improve Employment Outcomes for Individuals with Autism? Ms. Meyers and Ms. Kaup are majoring in psychology and their Faculty Mentor is Dr. Cindi May.

Savannah Fatigante of the School of the Arts for Reconstructing History: Delft 17th Century Masterpieces for Fashion. Ms. Fatigante is majoring in theatre with a concentration in costume design and technology and her Faculty Mentor is Professor Janine McCabe ’98.

Anna Heuisler of the School of Business for Health-Related Repercussions of United States Free Trade Agreements. Ms. Heuisler is majoring in economics and her Faculty Mentors are Dr. Jessica Madariaga and Dr. Beatriz Maldonado.

Sara Solan for the School of Languages, Cultures, and World Affairs for Community Response to Refugees in Charleston. Ms. Solan is majoring in international studies and her Faculty Mentor is Professor Lancie Affonso ’96.
“The EXPO is about bringing the entire campus together to celebrate the work students and faculty are doing, and to share that work with the local community,” adds Honors College Dean Beth Meyer-Bernstein. “It also gives our students yet another opportunity to practice and enhance their professional communication skills, to advocate publicly for their research and for themselves, and to network.”
