This award is sponsored by the Alumni Association, the School of Natural and Environmental Sciences, and the Alpha Epsilon Delta Pre-Health Honor Society. The award recognizes graduates whose practice of medicine, including dental, veterinary, and related medical sciences, represents remarkable achievements, and who demonstrates an enduring commitment to the College and their communities. The members of Alpha Epsilon Delta select the recipient.

2025 Outstanding Service Award in Medicine

Youlanda Gibbs ’98

Youlanda is the founder and executive director of The Palmetto Palace in Charleston, a nonprofit for families in need of medical care and support services. In addition to services in the Charleston area, the organization has a mobile health unit that provides preventative and diagnostic care to underserved communities in rural South Carolina.   

 Youlanda received her Bachelor of Science in elementary education from the College of Charleston in 1998. She earned her Master of Education in creative arts from Lesley University in 2001 and received her Doctor of Education in educational leadership from Nova Southeastern University in 2009. Before launching her Palmetto Palace in 2006, Youlanda taught as an adjunct faculty member at the College.  

Youlanda has been recognized by numerous organizations for Palmetto Palace’s measurable impact on chronic disease prevention, vaccine access and educational equity.
