CofC at Charleston Library Society: Reception with Tour and Presentation, Thursday, Sept. 19

You are invited to register for “Behind the Scenes at the Charleston Library Society (CLS)” that includes a tour, reception, and presentation, on Thursday, Sept. 19, from 5:30-7 pm.

Did you know the CLS had a pivotal role in founding the College of Charleston? In 1770, SC Lieutenant Governor and CLS member, William Bull recommended establishing the College to the General Assembly, which was made up mostly of other CLS members. Within a few months, they had developed a comprehensive plan for the school, and then a few months after that, upon his death, Benjamin Smith, VP of the CLS, left 500 pounds sterling to the CLS for the construction of the College, making him our first benefactor.

Join special guest presenter, Kay Hart, former literacy professor at CofC, as she dives into the CLS special collections and showcases their Shakespeare works. Prior to Kay’s presentation, enjoy a reception in the Main Reading Room and Bindery with wine and light snacks as you explore the main reading room, bindery, and stacks.

Tickets are $30 per person through August 25; tickets are $40 starting August 26.

Charleston Library Society is located at 164 King Street, Downtown Charleston.
